ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
In
my painting I have explored many subjects and themes: landscape,
interior domestic spaces, vessels, figures and animals, as well as
solitude and abstraction. The paintings which have emerged from
this exploration all have in common certain technical issues which
are of more interest to me than the particular subject of individual
paintings. The subject, what ever it is, will naturally be
enhanced if
I pay attention to the treatment, consider how to describe and how
much to edit.
The process involves discipline and discovery while at the same time allowing freedom and spontaneity. I have a particular love of gesture and colour through which I convey a sense of movement and tension, even in a static piece. Lines and shapes convey energy. This variety of considerations informs my work.

As
I progress I am more interested in supplying less obvious
information, that the viewer may be engaged by suggestion rather than
description. A good painting, regardless of scale or subject
will feel alive and the viewer will keep making discoveries over
time.
To make such paintings is my intention. Visual poetry. Serious play.
